Macedonia’s national handball team will begin its qualification campaign for the 2028 European Championship on Wednesday, November 4, with a home match against Luxembourg in Skopje.

The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. local time at the Boris Trajkovski Sports Center, where Macedonia will look to open its qualifying campaign with a victory in front of its home supporters.

Head coach Kiril Lazarov has selected a 16-player squad for the opening fixture, leaving two players out of his initial 18-man roster.

The match represents the beginning of another European qualification campaign for a national team that has established a strong following among Macedonian sports fans at home and abroad.

Lazarov Makes Final Squad Decisions

Ahead of the Luxembourg encounter, Lazarov finalized his matchday squad and decided to leave Gogov and Nikolov out of the lineup.

The decision reduces the original 18-player selection to the 16 players eligible to participate in the opening match.

With the qualification campaign getting underway, Macedonia will be aiming to make a positive start and build momentum for the remaining fixtures.

Playing at home provides an opportunity to begin the campaign with the support of Macedonian fans, although the team will still need to deliver a disciplined performance against Luxembourg.

The match will also offer an early indication of how Lazarov’s squad is preparing for the challenges ahead.

Macedonia Sets Its Sights on Euro 2028

The 2028 European Men’s Handball Championship will be the next major continental target for Macedonia.

The national team has developed a recognizable presence in European handball, with Lazarov playing a central role in its history, first as a player and later as head coach.

His leadership remains an important part of the team’s efforts to compete internationally and maintain its position among Europe’s established handball nations.

For Macedonians living abroad, national team matches remain an important connection to sporting life in their homeland.

Wednesday’s encounter against Luxembourg offers supporters the first opportunity to follow Macedonia’s progress in the new qualification cycle.
