Macedonian filmmaker Tamara Kotevska has won a prestigious Wildscreen Panda Award for her documentary The Tale of Silyan, marking another major international achievement for the acclaimed director.
Kotevska received recognition for directing and producing the documentary, a National Geographic Documentary Films production. The Wildscreen Panda Awards, often described as the “Green Oscars,” celebrate outstanding achievements in natural history and environmental filmmaking.
The award represents another important milestone in Kotevska’s career and highlights the growing international recognition of Macedonian documentary cinema.
A Macedonian Story Reaches the World
The Tale of Silyan explores the relationship between people and nature through a deeply personal story rooted in Macedonia.
The documentary follows Nikola, a farmer who develops an unexpected connection with an injured white stork.
Their relationship unfolds against the backdrop of rural life, economic uncertainty and environmental change.
Through this story, Kotevska examines how human communities and wildlife depend on the same landscapes for survival.
The film draws inspiration from the traditional Macedonian folktale of Silyan, a young man who transforms into a stork.
By connecting folklore with contemporary reality, the documentary introduces international audiences to an important element of Macedonian cultural heritage.
The film also raises broader questions about migration, belonging and the relationship between people and their homeland.
These themes resonate particularly strongly with communities whose lives have been shaped by migration.
Another International Achievement for Kotevska
Kotevska previously gained worldwide recognition as co-director of Honeyland, the Macedonian documentary that received two Academy Award nominations in 2020.
The film made Oscar history by earning nominations in both the Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film categories.
It introduced audiences around the world to the life of Hatidže Muratova, a traditional beekeeper living in rural Macedonia.
With The Tale of Silyan, Kotevska continues exploring the connections between people, the natural environment and traditional ways of life.
The latest Wildscreen recognition further strengthens her international profile and brings renewed attention to Macedonia’s documentary filmmaking community.
For Macedonians living abroad, the film offers a connection to the country’s landscapes, traditions and storytelling heritage.
Its international success also demonstrates how locally rooted stories can reach audiences far beyond the Balkans.
