Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope that Democratic gains in the 2026 US midterm elections will lead to increased American military and financial support for Ukraine as the country continues to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.
Speaking in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF on November 4, Zelenskyy discussed the importance of sustained US assistance and cooperation between Washington and European allies.
His remarks come as the election results raise questions about the future direction of American foreign policy under President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy Looks to Congress for Stronger Support
Zelenskyy has repeatedly emphasized that American assistance remains essential to Ukraine’s defense capabilities and its position in potential negotiations with Russia.
A Congress more supportive of Ukraine could influence future decisions on military aid, financial assistance and oversight of the administration’s foreign policy.
However, congressional support would not automatically translate into a change in US policy. Decisions on new assistance would still depend on legislation, funding agreements and the relationship between Congress and the White House.
The Ukrainian president has also stressed the importance of maintaining cooperation with European governments, which continue to play a major role in supporting Kyiv.
Ukraine’s Future Remains a Key Foreign Policy Issue
The political developments in Washington come as Ukraine continues to seek international support while diplomatic efforts to end the war remain uncertain.
Any substantial change in American assistance could affect Ukraine’s military planning, its relationship with European allies and its negotiating position.
For Kyiv, the central question is whether the new political balance in Washington will produce concrete commitments rather than political statements.
Despite the election results, President Trump retains significant authority over American diplomacy and foreign policy.
Zelenskyy’s comments underline Ukraine’s continued focus on securing long-term US support while navigating political changes in Washington.
