The 2026 US midterm elections are on track to become the most expensive in American history. Campaign spending could reach $11.9 billion, while more than 57 million Americans had already voted before Election Day.

The figures highlight the scale of the November 3 elections, which will determine control of Congress.

According to Reuters, the nonpartisan campaign finance organization OpenSecrets estimates that candidates and outside political groups will spend a combined $11.9 billion.

Meanwhile, early voting has surpassed the levels recorded during the 2022 midterm elections.

More Than 57 Million Americans Vote Early

Data from the University of Florida Election Lab showed that more than 57 million Americans had cast ballots by Monday, November 2.

By comparison, approximately 46 million people voted early during the 2022 midterms.

The increase demonstrates substantial participation before Election Day. However, early voting figures alone cannot determine the final outcome.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are being contested, along with 35 Senate seats.

Voters are also choosing governors in 36 states.

Republicans entered Election Day holding narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress.

Democrats need a net gain of four seats in the House and four in the Senate to secure control, according to Reuters.

Campaign Spending Reaches Historic Levels

The 2026 elections have attracted enormous financial investment from political campaigns and outside organizations.

OpenSecrets estimates total spending at $11.9 billion, potentially setting a new record for a US midterm election.

Technology billionaire Elon Musk had contributed approximately $366 million toward supporting Republican candidates and causes as of mid-October, according to campaign finance records cited by Reuters.

Meanwhile, both major parties have invested heavily in competitive congressional races.

The economy, immigration policies and the cost of living have featured prominently throughout the campaign.

For President Donald Trump, the results will determine the balance of power in Washington during the remaining two years of his term.

A change in congressional control could affect the administration’s ability to pass legislation and advance its policy agenda.

However, the final composition of Congress will depend on results across numerous states and districts.

With millions of ballots already cast, Americans are now deciding which party will control the legislative branch of the federal government.
