President Donald Trump acknowledged the Democrats’ performance after Republicans suffered major losses in the 2026 midterm elections, telling Fox News: “The Democrats did a good job.”
The comment came during a late-night telephone interview, as election projections showed Democrats winning control of the Senate and closing in on a majority in the House of Representatives. The results point toward a period of divided government that could significantly limit Trump’s legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency.
Trump sought to shift responsibility for the Republican setbacks onto the party’s candidates, arguing that some had failed to perform even in traditionally Republican states. He also indicated that he was prepared to work with Democrats, while making clear he could use his presidential veto power against legislation he opposes.
The Associated Press reported that Democrats had flipped at least six Senate seats, including victories in states that have traditionally favored Republicans.
Historic Democratic victory in Texas
One of the most significant results came from Texas, where Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the race for the U.S. Senate.
Talarico’s victory marks the first time since 1988 that a Democrat has won a U.S. Senate seat in Texas, ending a 38-year Republican winning streak in the state’s Senate contests.
Paxton had received Trump’s endorsement, making the result another setback for the president’s influence in key Republican strongholds.
Democrats also made gains in several other states, while the final balance of power in the House remained subject to additional vote counting.
The election results are expected to reshape the political landscape in Washington, giving Democrats greater power to oversee the administration and challenge Trump’s legislative priorities.
