Novak Djokovic has brought his 2026 tennis season to an earlier-than-expected end after suffering a surprise defeat to qualifier Rinky Hijikata at the Paris Masters.
The Serbian star made a strong start after overcoming a difficult opening-round test against Valentin Vacherot. He also began well against Hijikata, taking control of the first set and maintaining his advantage during the early stages of the second.
However, the Australian raised his level, while Djokovic began struggling with his serve and consistency. The Serbian was unable to regain control and eventually suffered a shocking elimination in the third round.
The defeat also ended Djokovic’s mathematical chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin, giving him additional weeks to rest and prepare for the next competitive season.
Djokovic: “He Played Incredible Tennis”
Speaking after the match, Djokovic admitted his disappointment but praised his opponent’s performance.
“Of course, I’m disappointed. I felt that I was dominating throughout the first set and for a few more games in the second, but then he raised the level of his game. I wasn’t serving that well and, honestly, he played incredible tennis.
“He hardly missed a shot, kept the ball low and delivered an outstanding performance. It’s a shame I didn’t take my chances in the third set, but I think his victory was fully deserved,” Djokovic said.
The Serbian added that he had struggled to maintain control of the match and was not feeling particularly fresh at this stage of the season.
“Nobody likes to lose, but this is just another match. I should have won. I played well in the first set, but then completely lost control of the match. I don’t feel particularly fresh at this point in the season, but that’s no excuse for the defeat.
“The plan now is simply to rest. I’m really looking forward to the break ahead,” Djokovic said.
