Serbian folk dancers will bring traditional Balkan music and dance to an NBA arena in Washington, D.C., later this month, offering American basketball fans a glimpse of Serbia’s cultural heritage.
The Opančići Serbian Cultural Center has announced a special halftime performance during the Washington Wizards’ game against the Houston Rockets on Sunday, November 15, 2026.
The event will take place at Capital One Arena, with the basketball game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
For members of the Serbian-American community, the performance represents another opportunity to celebrate their cultural identity on one of America’s most recognizable sporting stages.
Serbian Folk Dancers Bring Cultural Traditions to the NBA
Based in the Washington metropolitan area, the Opančići Serbian Cultural Center works to preserve Serbian traditions through folk dancing, music, and community activities.
The organization serves Serbian-American families across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, providing opportunities for younger generations to connect with their heritage.
Traditional Serbian folk dancing is an important part of cultural celebrations, particularly within immigrant communities.
One of its best-known forms is the kolo, a traditional circle dance in which participants join hands and move together to the rhythm of the music.
For Serbian communities living abroad, such performances are more than entertainment. They provide opportunities to pass cultural knowledge to younger generations and introduce Serbian traditions to audiences unfamiliar with Balkan heritage.
According to the cultural center’s official event calendar, Opančići will take the court during halftime of the Wizards-Rockets matchup.
The appearance will bring Serbian folklore into an American professional basketball setting, connecting two forms of entertainment that play important roles in the lives of many Serbian-Americans.
A Growing Serbian Cultural Presence in Washington
This will not be the group’s first appearance at an NBA game.
On December 7, 2024, the Opančići Serbian Folklore Ensemble performed during halftime of a Washington Wizards game against the Denver Nuggets at Capital One Arena.
According to the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America, the earlier performance featured traditional dances and costumes representing different regions of Serbia.
The dancers also performed the traditional Serbian kolo, introducing thousands of basketball spectators to an important part of Serbian cultural heritage.
The ensemble’s previous appearance highlighted the connection between Serbian-American cultural organizations and the wider American community.
Opančići has also participated in cultural projects beyond the basketball court.
In 2022, the organization helped support the filming of a documentary project about Serbian kolo in Washington, with performances recorded near several of the capital’s best-known landmarks.
These activities reflect the center’s broader mission of preserving cultural traditions while sharing them with American audiences.
The November 15 performance comes as Serbian-American organizations continue to create opportunities for cultural exchange through music, dance, and public events.
For families who have maintained their traditions across generations, seeing Serbian folk dancers perform at an NBA game offers a visible reminder that their cultural heritage remains part of the American story.
The Washington Wizards will host the Houston Rockets at Capital One Arena on November 15, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
The halftime performance is listed on the Opančići Serbian Cultural Center’s official calendar.
