Scarlett Johansson has revealed that her upcoming role in The Batman: Part II has been one of the most challenging acting experiences of her career, pushing her beyond her comfort zone and leaving her struggling to fully understand the character.

The 41-year-old actress, who received two Academy Award nominations in the same year for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, described the experience as unexpectedly difficult.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Johansson said the role brought her “a lot of existential angst, for some reason.”

“It was very hard to figure out. I don’t know why, whether it was just the role or it was just where I am in my life, but it was just hard to crack it. And that’s all I can say about it,” she explained.

Although details of her character have largely remained under wraps, reports have suggested that Johansson will portray Gilda Dent, the wife of Gotham City district attorney Harvey Dent.

Director Matt Reeves confirmed her involvement in the DC Comics sequel in May, sharing a GIF of Johansson from the 2013 science-fiction film Under the Skin.

The film will mark Johansson’s first appearance in the DC universe, following her highly successful years in Marvel films as Natasha Romanoff, better known as Black Widow.

She will join Robert Pattinson, who returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman, alongside Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry. Stan has reportedly been cast as Harvey Dent.

Reeves has previously indicated that the sequel will place greater emphasis on Bruce Wayne, exploring the man behind the Batman persona, after the 2022 original focused heavily on his early years as the masked crime fighter.

Production plans have reportedly faced delays, with Reeves temporarily stepping away due to a family matter. The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 18, 2028.

With Johansson describing the role as particularly difficult to unravel, expectations are building around what could be one of the most intriguing new characters in the next chapter of Gotham City’s story.
