Former British minister and diplomat Peter Mandelson has been released on bail following questioning, London police confirmed this morning
According to British media reports, authorities are investigating allegations that Mandelson passed sensitive information to American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson, a prominent figure in British politics and former UK ambassador in Washington, was detained around 5 p.m. yesterday on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
He has not made any public statement since the investigation began.
Mandelson was appointed ambassador to the United States by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in February last year. Reports allege that he shared information with Epstein concerning a potential sale of British property.
He was removed from his post last September following the first wave of revelations linked to the Epstein scandal. Since then, he has reportedly been stripped of his peerage and has left the Labour Party.
His arrest follows that of Prince Andrew, brother of King Charles III, who has also been implicated in the Epstein scandal.
Investigations are ongoing.
