U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a temporary delay of planned military strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure, following what he described as “very good and productive talks” with authorities in Iran.
According to reports cited by Reuters, Trump instructed the U.S. military to postpone any action for five days, pending the outcome of ongoing discussions.
The decision came after Tehran warned it could target Israeli power facilities and infrastructure supplying U.S. bases across the Persian Gulf if Washington moved forward with attacks on Iran’s energy network.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the two sides had engaged in “deep, detailed, and constructive” talks over the past two days, aimed at a “complete and total resolution” of tensions in the Middle East.
“Based on the tone and substance of these discussions, I have instructed the Department of War to delay all military strikes on Iranian electrical and energy infrastructure for a period of five days, depending on the success of the ongoing meetings,” Trump wrote.
Criticism of NATO
Despite the temporary de-escalation, Trump signaled that military action remains on the table.
“You will soon see what happens with the ultimatum regarding energy facilities—the outcome will be very good,” he said, warning that a “total destruction of Iran” could follow.
At the same time, Trump criticized the NATO alliance, accusing member states of not doing enough in relation to Iran.
Earlier, Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding that Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials responded that the strait remains operational but is restricted for what they described as hostile nations.
