Donald Trump joked that he could run for president of Venezuela, claiming he polls better than any politician in the country.
“People in Venezuela say that if I run for president, I would have higher ratings than anyone ever, so once I’m done with Iran, I can go to Venezuela,” Trump said at a press conference at the White House held after the rescue of pilots from a downed U.S. aircraft in Iran.
He said he could quickly learn Spanish because he is good with languages.
“I’ll learn Spanish fast. It won’t take long. I’m good with languages, and I’ll go to Venezuela. I’ll run for president. But we are very happy with the newly elected president they have right now,” he added.
Following the overthrow and capture of President Nicolás Maduro, Trump announced that the United States could govern Venezuela for a period of time. A few days after Maduro’s fall, Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as the new president of Venezuela.
