Key Iranian island attacked

According to the Iranian news agency Mehr, multiple strikes hit Iran’s Khark Island, a crucial hub for oil exports.

The island serves as the main terminal for most of Iran’s energy exports. The United States had previously carried out strikes on Khark during the war, but at the time, President Donald Trump emphasized that oil infrastructure had not been targeted.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to take over the island so the U.S. can monitor Iranian oil shipments. Just hours before the ultimatum set by Trump expired, the attack on the island occurred.

Iran loads nine out of ten barrels of oil at Khark Island for export. The oil terminal has a capacity of seven million barrels of crude oil per day. Due to its shallow coastline, Khark is the only location where massive tankers can dock alongside long piers to load oil delivered via underwater pipelines from Iran’s largest oil fields. This makes the island both the easiest and the most dangerous target in the region.
