Fort Lauderdale to Host Macedonian Film Evening Featuring The Tale of Silyan

The United Macedonian Diaspora is organizing a cultural film event in Fort Lauderdale on Monday, April 27, bringing together members of the community for an evening centered on Macedonian storytelling, cinema and shared cultural connection.

The screening will take place at Savor Cinema, located at 503 SE 6th Street, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Organizers have also noted that free parking will be available at the Courthouse Parking Garage.

At the center of the event is The Tale of Silyan, a film from the Oscar-nominated director of Honeyland. Set in rural Macedonia, the story follows Nikola, a farmer facing growing uncertainty after government measures block the sale of his land and crops, while members of his family leave the country in search of better prospects abroad.

As his circumstances change, Nikola begins working at a landfill, where he encounters an injured white stork named Silyan. The relationship that develops between the man and the bird becomes a central part of the story, opening space for reflection on loneliness, survival and finding meaning in difficult conditions.

The film combines visually striking rural landscapes with a personal story shaped by wider social themes, including migration, economic hardship, environmental pressure and perseverance.

Admission to the event is free, while donations are being accepted to support the screening. Suggested contribution levels include Friend of UMD at 20 dollars, MK Film Supporter at 100 dollars, Cultural Advocate at 250 dollars and Cinema Benefactor at 500 dollars.

Organizers say the evening is intended not only as a film screening, but also as a gathering point for Macedonians and friends of the community to connect through culture and conversation.
