Trump Speaks Out After Armed Attack Disrupts High-Profile Washington Event

President Donald Trump has spoken publicly about the shooting that shattered the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, describing a chaotic scene in which Secret Service agents moved him out of danger within seconds after an armed man breached a security checkpoint and opened fire. The incident took place at the Washington Hilton during a dinner attended by roughly 2,600 guests, including Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and senior administration officials.

According to Reuters and the Associated Press, the suspect forced his way past security near the ballroom while carrying multiple weapons and fired a shotgun, injuring a Secret Service agent before being subdued and taken into custody. Trump was removed from the room as panic spread among guests and the event was ultimately canceled.

In comments after the attack, Trump said he was not certain whether he had been the intended target, but described the gunman as a disturbed and radicalized individual. AP reported that investigators believe the suspect had written about targeting administration officials, while officials have not yet publicly established a final motive.

Trump also said the security reaction was immediate and highly effective. Reuters reported that agents quickly shielded and evacuated top officials, while later reporting indicated that the wounded Secret Service officer is expected to recover.

The shooting has renewed questions about security at one of Washington’s highest-profile public events. In the aftermath, Trump urged that the correspondents’ dinner be rescheduled within 30 days, while debate intensified over how the attacker managed to get so close to the ballroom despite multiple layers of security.

The episode has now become more than a one-night security breach. It has opened a broader conversation about political violence, event protection and the vulnerability of even the most heavily guarded public gatherings in the U.S. capital.
