Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo and Samantha Morton are reportedly being considered for acting nominations as Nolan’s epic builds momentum ahead of the Academy Awards.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is setting its sights on awards-season success after becoming a major box-office hit, with six members of its ensemble cast reportedly being promoted for potential Oscar nominations.
According to Gold Derby, the film’s awards campaign includes Matt Damon in the Best Actor category, Anne Hathaway and Samantha Morton for Best Supporting Actress, and Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and John Leguizamo for Best Supporting Actor.
The reported submissions highlight the film’s broad acting lineup, which has drawn attention alongside the epic’s commercial success and critical reception since its July release.
Anne Hathaway’s Supporting Actress Campaign
One of the most notable developments is Hathaway’s reported placement in the Best Supporting Actress category for her portrayal of Penelope, the wife of Odysseus.
There had been speculation about whether Hathaway would campaign for Best Actress, but the supporting category could offer a different path to recognition.
She would reportedly compete alongside Morton, whose brief but memorable appearance as Circe has also attracted awards attention. Having two performers from the same film in the same category could complicate their prospects, depending on how Academy voters distribute their support.
The Best Actress race is also expected to feature strong competition, including Julianne Moore for Jesse Eisenberg’s comedy The Debut, Sandra Hüller for Fatherland and Rose, and Inde Navarrette for the horror film Obsession.
Three Men Compete for Supporting Actor Recognition
The reported campaign also includes three male performers from The Odyssey in the Best Supporting Actor category: Holland, Pattinson and Leguizamo.
Pattinson plays Antinous, a villainous figure in the epic, while Leguizamo portrays Eumaeus, the loyal servant of Odysseus. Holland is also among the actors reportedly being considered for supporting recognition.
With three cast members competing in the same category, securing a nomination could prove challenging. Leguizamo’s emotionally grounded performance as Eumaeus has been highlighted as one of the film’s memorable supporting roles.
Damon, meanwhile, is reportedly being considered for Best Actor for his portrayal of Odysseus. He faces competition from a crowded field that includes Andrew Scott for Elsinore and John Malkovich for Wild Horse Nine.
Who Could Miss Out?
Several other prominent members of The Odyssey cast are reportedly not part of the current acting campaign. They include Himesh Patel, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page and Jon Bernthal.
Their absence from the reported list does not necessarily rule out future recognition, but it suggests that the film’s awards strategy is currently focused on a select group of performers.
Nolan could also be in contention for Best Director. He previously won the Oscar for directing Oppenheimer in 2024, adding to the expectations surrounding his latest epic.
A Competitive Oscar Season Ahead
Other films drawing awards-season attention include Martin McDonagh’s comedy-drama Wild Horse Nine, the Spanish historical drama La Bola Negra, Olivia Wilde’s comedy The Invite, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 3, scheduled for release in December.
The Academy Award nominations are scheduled to be announced on January 21, with the ceremony set for March 14.
For The Odyssey, the coming months will determine whether its box-office success and ensemble performances translate into Oscar nominations and another major awards-season achievement for Nolan.
