Macedonia Marks the Anniversary of Nikola Karev’s Death

Macedonia is marking the anniversary of the death of Nikola Karev, one of the central figures of the Macedonian revolutionary movement and the president of the Kruševo Republic, established during the Ilinden Uprising of 1903.

Karev remains one of the most recognizable names in the country’s historical memory, closely associated with the struggle for freedom and organized resistance against Ottoman rule. Born in Kruševo in 1877, he became involved in the revolutionary movement at a young age and was active both as a teacher and as part of the wider network of the Macedonian revolutionary organization.

During the Ilinden Uprising, he assumed one of the movement’s most important roles, leading the short-lived Kruševo Republic, which remains one of the most significant political symbols in Macedonian history. Although it existed only briefly, the republic has retained strong historical and symbolic importance as an early expression of self-rule.

After the uprising was crushed, Karev left Macedonia but continued his political and revolutionary work in exile. In Sofia, he was linked to socialist circles and remained engaged in efforts connected to the Macedonian cause.

In the spring of 1905, he set out once again for Macedonia with the intention of continuing his activity on the ground. On the way to Kruševo, his armed group was surrounded by Ottoman forces after being betrayed. On April 27, 1905, near the village of Rajčani, Karev was killed in an unequal battle together with most of his comrades.

Although he died at only 27 years of age, Nikola Karev remains one of the defining personalities of the Macedonian liberation movement. His role in the Kruševo Republic and his commitment to the idea of freedom have made him a lasting historical symbol.

Today, his name continues to be commemorated through monuments, memorial events and public remembrance, while his legacy remains part of the country’s historical identity.
