Hollywood actor John Malkovich has received Croatian citizenship, in a formal ceremony held in Croatia. The citizenship decision was presented to him by Croatian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Davor Božinović, who described the occasion as a short but important ceremony for handing over the official decision on Malkovich’s admission to Croatian citizenship.
Before receiving the citizenship document, Malkovich was also received by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. Plenković said he was pleased that the actor continues to nurture his Croatian roots, linking the decision to Malkovich’s family background and his ancestral connection to Croatia.
According to the reports, Malkovich’s great-grandfather and great-grandmother emigrated to the United States from the town of Ozalj in Karlovac County. That family origin is presented as the basis of the actor’s connection with Croatia and the context in which the citizenship was granted.
The reports frame the decision as a symbolic recognition of Malkovich’s Croatian ancestry and as a formal confirmation of his connection to the country through his family heritage. The ceremony brought together the legal act of granting citizenship with a public acknowledgment of the actor’s Croatian roots, which he has continued to maintain.
