Sali and Berset Confirm Cooperation Between Macedonia and the Council of Europe

Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Affairs Bekim Sali met today with Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset in a discussion focused on the country’s progress in European reforms and further strengthening cooperation with the international organization.

The meeting confirmed that relations between Macedonia and the Council of Europe remain stable and well developed, particularly in areas crucial for European integration, rule of law, democratic standards, and the protection of human freedoms and rights.

Sali specifically welcomed the completion of the post monitoring dialogue of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly, which was finalized in January 2026. He assessed this step as important international recognition of the country’s reform processes and progress in aligning with European criteria.

The talks also focused on the support the Council of Europe provides in the process of approaching the European Union, particularly through Chapters 23 and 24, which cover justice, fundamental rights, security, and freedom.

The minister expressed gratitude for the Council of Europe’s contribution in evaluating the Action Plan for the Rights of Community Members, as well as for alignment with the Rule of Law Roadmap, documents that are part of key obligations within the “Fundamental Values” Cluster.

Additionally, the role of the Council of Europe’s expert bodies was emphasized, including the Venice Commission, GRECO, MONEYVAL, CEPEJ, and the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), which, according to the interlocutors, have essential significance in advancing judicial independence, fighting corruption, and protecting human rights.

Sali concluded by stressing that the Government remains fully committed to the reform agenda and to continuing the European integration path, in continuous coordination with European institutions and international partners.
