Lufthansa is ending its direct Frankfurt–Skopje service after more than three years of operations, removing the route from its booking system for both the summer period and the upcoming winter season, which begins on October 25. The final flight on the route is reported for May 31, after which passengers travelling between Skopje and Frankfurt will be offered connections through Vienna with Austrian Airlines, a carrier within the same Lufthansa Group.
The route was initially expected to be suspended from June 1 for one month and to resume on July 1. However, the airline has now removed all flights until the end of the summer and for the next winter schedule as well. The Frankfurt–Skopje service had operated up to ten times per week, but during the previous winter Lufthansa significantly reduced its Skopje operations, cutting frequencies to only three weekly rotations in February and March.
Lufthansa launched the Frankfurt–Skopje route in April 2023 after receiving Macedonian government subsidies to open the service. The subsidy agreement lasted until December 30, 2025. For passengers, the cancellation means the loss of the only direct Lufthansa connection between Skopje and Frankfurt, although Wizz Air continues to operate flights to Hahn, located about 125 kilometres from Frankfurt’s main airport.
The decision comes as Lufthansa Group accelerates the consolidation of its European network, focusing on cost reductions and more profitable routes. The group has also reduced frequencies to other cities in the region, including Belgrade and Ljubljana, while cutting hundreds of weekly flights from its Frankfurt and Munich bases.
The company has recently faced additional pressure from staff strikes, the closure of its CityLine subsidiary, the suspension of several routes and uncertainty over fuel prices linked to conflicts in the Middle East. For Skopje, the route cancellation represents a notable change in air connectivity with Germany’s main financial hub, leaving Vienna as the main Lufthansa Group transfer option for passengers heading to Frankfurt.
