Michael Carrick Confirmed as Manchester United Manager After Strong Interim Spell

Manchester United have officially confirmed that Michael Carrick will remain as the club’s permanent manager, signing a contract that keeps him at Old Trafford until 2028. The decision comes after Carrick initially took charge in January as interim coach following the departure of Ruben Amorim, at a time when the club was searching for stability after another unsuccessful managerial period.

Carrick’s impact was immediate and significant. From January until the end of the season, Manchester United recorded 11 wins in 16 Premier League matches under his leadership, collecting more points than any other team in the league during that period. That turnaround allowed the club to finish third in the table and secure a return to the Champions League.

United ended the season behind Arsenal and Manchester City, but ahead of Aston Villa and Liverpool. The club had reportedly already agreed the main details of Carrick’s contract earlier, while the final stage of negotiations focused only on formalities connected to his coaching staff.

After signing the deal, Carrick said that the responsibility of leading Manchester United fills him with enormous pride. He added that it is time for the club to move forward together, with ambition and a clear purpose.

The appointment represents a major show of trust in a former United player who understands the club closely and who arrived in January as a short-term solution before earning the right to continue permanently. His results changed the direction of the season and gave the club a platform for a more stable period.

However, the next phase is expected to bring greater challenges. United will return to European competition, while the team will also need to manage a more demanding schedule next season. According to the articles, Carrick will need support in the summer transfer window, especially in midfield, with Casemiro leaving and Ugarte failing to meet expectations, while a left back is also needed as competition for Luke Shaw.

Carrick’s permanent appointment therefore closes one chapter of uncertainty and opens another built around continuity, renewed ambition and the hope that a club legend can guide Manchester United back toward the standards expected at Old Trafford.
