Montenegro will host the EU-Western Balkans Summit on June 5 in Tivat, bringing together European and regional leaders for one of the highest-level diplomatic events ever held in the country. The summit will be hosted by Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović, whose office said the gathering comes at a key moment for Montenegro’s European path. According to the announcement, Milatović and European Council President António Costa jointly invited leaders from the European Union and the Western Balkans to meet in Tivat.

The event is expected to include European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and other European and regional leaders.

Officials in Podgorica described the summit as a sign of Montenegro’s growing international credibility and a confirmation that the country is no longer only a participant in European dialogue, but also a host of major political discussions. The meeting comes as EU enlargement has returned high on the European agenda, with Montenegro presenting itself as the most advanced candidate for membership. The country has set a clear ambition to become the European Union’s 28th member by 2028.

Milatović’s office said the summit will send a message that the European future of the Western Balkans remains achievable through trust, partnership and enlargement. For Montenegro, the gathering in Tivat is being framed as both a diplomatic milestone and a symbol of its final phase on the road toward EU membership.
