Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it carried out missile and drone attacks targeting the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet, an airbase and military helicopters in the region.
The group said the strikes came in response to what it described as a U.S. attack on a telecommunications tower south of Qeshm Island. Iranian reports also claimed that naval forces fired missiles at a vessel identified as Panaya, following an alleged U.S. strike on an Iranian tanker near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the reports, a projectile hit the tanker and damaged its engine room. The IRGC warned that any threat to the security of the Strait of Hormuz would carry a “high cost” for U.S. forces in the region.
There has been no independent confirmation of the claims, and U.S. officials have not immediately commented on the allegations.
The developments come amid rising concerns over a wider escalation in the Persian Gulf, a critical route for global oil and gas shipments.
