Belgrade Introduces New Standards for Bicycle Parking Across the City

Belgrade has introduced mandatory standards for bicycle parking spaces and garages, a move aimed at making cycling more practical, organized and accessible across the Serbian capital.

The announcement was made by the civic association Streets for Cyclists on June 3, World Bicycle Day. According to the group, the new rules define how bicycle parking should be organized, how much capacity different types of buildings should provide, and what accessibility standards must be met.

The measures are expected to create safer and better-arranged places for residents to leave their bicycles, both in public areas and inside government and private buildings. Cycling advocates say the decision is an important step toward making bikes a more realistic everyday transportation option in Belgrade.

The standards were introduced through cooperation between Streets for Cyclists, the city’s Secretariat for Transport and the Belgrade Open School. Detailed technical guidelines are included in a planning document prepared by the Center for Urban Development Planning.

The association also used World Bicycle Day to call on citizens, institutions and organizations to highlight the need for safer cycling routes, accessible services and secure parking facilities.

Cycling groups have long argued that bicycles can help reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and make cities more livable. The United Nations declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day in 2018, recognizing the bicycle as an affordable, inclusive and environmentally friendly form of transport.

Streets for Cyclists, founded in 2011 by Belgrade residents who use bicycles for transportation, continues to advocate for better conditions for cyclists and a shift toward a city designed more for people than for cars.
