Torrential Rains Trigger Dozens of Landslides Across Slovenia, Causing Millions of Euros in Damage

Slovenia has been hit by severe weather conditions after torrential rainfall triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and significant infrastructure damage across several parts of the country. Authorities reported that around 50 landslides were activated during the latest wave of storms, creating serious challenges for local communities, emergency services, and transportation networks.

The heavy rainfall affected numerous municipalities, with rescue and civil protection services responding to multiple incidents involving blocked roads, damaged infrastructure, and threats to residential areas. Several landslides occurred near populated settlements, while floodwaters and mudslides disrupted traffic and complicated access to affected regions. Emergency crews were deployed throughout the country to monitor unstable terrain and carry out immediate interventions aimed at preventing further damage.

According to initial assessments, the financial consequences of the storm are expected to reach several million euros. Local authorities and infrastructure operators have already begun evaluating the extent of the damage, which includes affected roads, drainage systems, public facilities, and agricultural land. In several areas, road sections were temporarily closed due to safety concerns, while cleanup operations started immediately after the worst of the weather passed.

Meteorological conditions developed rapidly, with intense rainfall saturating the ground and significantly increasing the risk of slope instability. Experts noted that the large amount of precipitation falling within a short period contributed to the activation of numerous landslides across different regions of the country. Authorities warned that additional ground movements remain possible in vulnerable areas even after rainfall levels decrease, prompting continued monitoring of high-risk locations.
