Taiwan’s military has carried out a high profile live fire exercise using US supplied HIMARS rocket systems, marking the first time the advanced launchers have fired rockets into waters facing mainland China. The drill, conducted along Taiwan’s western coastline, comes amid rising tensions across the Taiwan Strait and growing concerns about Beijing’s military pressure on the self governing island.
The exercise was designed to simulate a response to a potential Chinese invasion and showcased Taiwan’s evolving defense strategy centered on mobility, rapid deployment, and precision strikes. Military officials said the HIMARS launchers fired reduced range training rockets into nearby waters, demonstrating the system’s ability to quickly deploy, launch, and relocate before becoming vulnerable to enemy counterattacks. The launchers reportedly moved into position, received firing orders, and fired their rockets within minutes, highlighting the effectiveness of the so called “shoot and scoot” tactic.
The HIMARS system has become one of the most recognizable weapons platforms in modern warfare due to its mobility and precision. Taiwan’s acquisition of the system reflects a broader shift toward asymmetric defense capabilities, a strategy strongly encouraged by Washington. Rather than matching China’s larger military asset for asset, Taiwan is increasingly investing in weapons designed to complicate and slow any potential invasion attempt. The latest drills also included 155mm artillery systems and tested the military’s ability to rapidly respond to emerging threats along the island’s western coast.
The exercise takes place against the backdrop of continued Chinese military activity around Taiwan. Beijing considers the island part of its territory and has repeatedly stated that reunification remains a national objective. In recent years, China has expanded military patrols, exercises, and air incursions near Taiwan, while increasing pressure on the island diplomatically and militarily. Taiwan, meanwhile, has continued strengthening its defenses with support from the United States, which remains its primary arms supplier despite maintaining no formal diplomatic relations with Taipei.
The drills also come as questions remain over the future of additional US military sales to Taiwan. Washington previously announced plans to provide dozens of additional HIMARS systems as part of a broader defense package. However, reports suggest that some discussions regarding future arms transfers may have slowed following recent diplomatic engagements between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, reflecting the delicate balance between security cooperation and broader US China relations.
While the exercise was presented as a routine training operation, it carries significant symbolic value. By demonstrating the operational readiness of one of its most advanced weapons systems, Taiwan is sending a message that it intends to strengthen its deterrence capabilities amid an increasingly uncertain security environment. As tensions in the Taiwan Strait continue to shape regional geopolitics, military preparedness on both sides remains under close international scrutiny.
