Love at 1,454 Feet: The Daredevil Proposal That Shut Down the Empire State Building

Two well known urban climbers scaled the needle of the Empire State Building on Wednesday, evading security to reach the 1,454 foot summit where they unfurled a banner and appeared to get engaged before being taken into police custody. The masked individuals, identified by law enforcement as Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, who goes by Ivan Beerkus, were apprehended without incident after two Emergency Service Unit officers climbed four ladders to reach them at the top of the spire. The stunt, which occurred around noon during a sweltering summer day in Manhattan, represents one of the most brazen security breaches in the landmark’s recent history.

Nikolau and Kuznetsov are not amateurs. The Russian couple, who reside in New Jersey, have built a global following as “daredevil influencers,” documenting their climbs atop skyscrapers and tall structures around the world on social media. Nikolau’s Instagram account features dozens of posts showing the pair posing at vertiginous heights, and a pinned post promotes “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” a 2024 Netflix documentary that Netflix describes as following two climbers who “risk their romance, freedom and lives to climb a mega skyscraper.” Atop the Empire State Building’s antenna on Wednesday, the couple unfurled a banner reading, “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” Air traffic control audio captured an NYPD helicopter pilot informing a LaGuardia controller that “two geniuses climbed to the top of the Empire State Building at the top of the spire” and that “he just proposed to her.” Nikolau later posted photos from the escapade, including a shot of her engagement ring with the city skyline in the background.

The security implications are significant. Investigators are still working to determine how the pair accessed a restricted area not open to the public, raising questions about vulnerabilities at one of New York’s most heavily surveilled landmarks. The antenna at the summit transmits broadcast signals for virtually all of New York’s local TV and radio stations, making any unauthorized access a potential threat to critical infrastructure. Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said that the stunt put city officials and building owners in a “tough spot,” warning that they “cannot take the chance that others will see this and decide to also try it.” He added that “the last thing that people who are responsible for the Empire State Building want is to turn this place into a target for that sort of activity, because ultimately it will end in some sort of tragedy.” The couple faces multiple charges including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal tampering, and criminal trespass.

The incident comes during an extraordinary period in New York City. Weeks earlier, the Knicks’ first championship in 53 years triggered raucous celebrations and a record breaking NYPD security deployment. World Cup matches are ongoing, and the upcoming wedding celebration of pop star Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden is expected to draw massive crowds. Bystander Elisa Morales, watching from a Midtown lunch break, captured the zeitgeist: “If it is a proposal, I don’t think that’s a proposal I would want, but I commend them for using something personal to try to make a more global impact… I think right now in New York, you have to go to an extreme to try to top what’s been going on.” The stunt places Nikolau and Kuznetsov in a long tradition of trespassing climbers drawn to the city’s iconic skyscrapers, from Philippe Petit’s 1974 highwire walk between the World Trade Center towers to French “Spiderman” Alain Robert’s repeated ascents of global landmarks. Whether their engagement at 1,450 feet becomes a footnote in New York lore or a catalyst for tightened security at the world’s most famous skyscraper remains to be seen.
