The Macedonian Association Ilinden in Tirana has spoken out against proposals or political discussions that could limit the voting rights of Macedonians living outside the country.
In a public statement, the organization said that Macedonians abroad should continue to have the right to participate in elections and described the diaspora as an important part of the country’s political, economic and cultural life.
The association said Macedonians living abroad maintain strong ties with their homeland and want to participate in building a democratic and prosperous country. It also argued that their contribution can be seen in areas such as foreign relations, economic support, culture and the promotion of Macedonia internationally.
The statement was signed by the organization’s president, Nikolla Gjurgjaj, who called on political parties to show greater respect and commitment toward Macedonians outside the country. The association said the issue should be approached with the goal of strengthening cooperation between Macedonia and its diaspora.
The reaction comes as political parties continue debating possible changes to the Electoral Code, including how citizens abroad should vote in future elections. Proposals have included electronic voting and postal voting, but the parties have not yet agreed on a final model.
Supporters of expanded diaspora voting argue that citizens abroad should have easier access to elections, while critics have raised questions about security, transparency and the practical organization of voting outside the country.
The Ilinden Association’s statement represents the position of one diaspora organization and does not reflect a formal decision by state institutions. However, it highlights the strong interest among Macedonians abroad in remaining involved in the country’s political process.
For Macedonians living in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world, the final form of the Electoral Code could determine how easily they will be able to vote in future elections.
