Tensions in the Middle East have escalated again after the United States launched new strikes against Iran, followed by Iranian attacks on American military sites in the Gulf region.
According to US Central Command, the American military carried out a wave of strikes against Iranian targets after three commercial vessels were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington described the Iranian actions as dangerous and said the strikes were intended to protect international shipping and impose consequences for what it called a violation of the ceasefire.
Several reports said the US operation targeted more than 80 Iranian military assets, including air defense systems, missile positions, drone facilities and port infrastructure. Iranian media reported impacts in parts of southern Iran, while Tehran condemned the US strikes and accused Washington of breaking an interim peace agreement.
Iran responded by saying it had targeted American military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait. Iranian officials described the attacks as retaliation for the US strikes, while regional authorities reported air raid warnings and heightened security measures.
The renewed exchange comes at a sensitive moment, as world leaders are also watching the situation during the NATO summit in Ankara. US President Donald Trump said the earlier understanding with Iran was over, while Iranian officials warned that further attacks would bring additional responses.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important shipping routes, especially for oil and gas. Any major disruption there can affect global energy prices, international trade and the broader economy, including countries far from the Middle East.
For the Balkans, the conflict is important not only because of security concerns, but also because instability in the Gulf can influence fuel prices, transport costs and inflation. Countries such as Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia could feel the economic effects if the crisis continues or expands.
At this stage, both sides blame each other for the latest escalation. The United States says it acted after attacks on commercial ships, while Iran says it was responding to American military action. International attention is now focused on whether diplomatic efforts can prevent a wider conflict or whether the situation will move into another dangerous phase.
