Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner has ended his campaign to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine, plunging one of the most competitive races of the 2026 midterm elections into chaos and forcing Democrats to scramble for a replacement with just weeks before a critical deadline. The former Marine and oyster farmer, who won a record breaking primary victory in June, announced his withdrawal in a video posted Wednesday after a former girlfriend accused him of sexual assault in 2021, causing nearly every major Democratic ally to rescind endorsements and the party’s Senate campaign arm to vow it would cut off funding if he remained on the ballot. Platner has until July 13 to formally withdraw, at which point the Maine Democratic Party will hold a nominating convention by July 27 to select a new challenger to Collins, who has held the seat since 1997.
The collapse of Platner’s candidacy represents a stunning reversal for a campaign that had been widely viewed as Democrats’ best opportunity to flip a Senate seat in a blue leaning state. Platner had ridden a wave of progressive populism to a decisive primary win over establishment favorite Governor Janet Mills, tapping into working class frustration with anti billionaire rhetoric and a promise of universal healthcare. His rapid rise had already survived multiple controversies, including offensive Reddit posts, a now covered tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and a Wall Street Journal report that his wife said he sent sexually explicit texts to several women early in their marriage. But the sexual assault allegation proved the breaking point. Jenny Racicot, a 41-year old Maine resident, alleged that Platner entered her home without permission while intoxicated in 2021 and forced her to have sex with him. Platner denied the accusation as “categorically untrue,” but the political damage was immediate, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Ruben Gallego, along with Representative Ro Khanna, all withdrew support, with Warren stating there “can be no tolerance for sexual assault.”
The scramble to replace Platner has already begun, with several Democrats signaling interest while others have taken themselves out of contention. Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, who had been allied with Platner, officially launched his bid within an hour of the withdrawal announcement, though he said he would not accept Platner’s endorsement and called sexual assault a “bright red line.” Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former CDC director Nirav Shah, and Maine Beer Co. founder Dan Kleban are also considering runs. Actor Patrick Dempsey, a Maine native best known for “Grey’s Anatomy,” publicly declined after speculation mounted, writing in the Portland Press Herald that while he had given “real thought” to a bid, “I believe I can contribute more effectively through the life I’ve already built.” The Maine Democratic Party has pledged transparency in selecting a replacement, with over 100 state committee members approving a convention process, though tensions flared when Platner’s campaign accused the party of cutting his supporters out of the conversation.
The stakes for Democrats could hardly be higher. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority, and Democrats need a net gain of four seats to reclaim control. Maine is the only blue leaning state with a Republican senator, making it a linchpin of the party’s strategy. If Democrats cannot carry Maine, their path to a majority becomes virtually impossible, forcing them to rely on winning in states Donald Trump carried by double digits in 2024, including Ohio, Iowa, Alaska, and Texas. For Collins, a moderate Republican seeking a sixth term, the turmoil offers a potential lifeline. For Platner, whose political rise from oyster farmer to Senate nominee took less than a year, the withdrawal marks a dramatic fall, one he framed not as an admission of guilt but as a sacrifice for the movement he built, even as the structures of power he once railed against closed in around him.
