At least six Maine Democrats have launched campaigns to fill the sudden void in one of the party’s most crucial Senate races, after progressive nominee Graham Platner withdrew amid a rape accusation that shattered his rapid political ascent less than three weeks before the ballot deadline. The seat, held by Republican Senator Susan Collins since 1997, is vital for Democratic hopes of reclaiming the Senate in November’s midterm elections. With the July 27 state deadline looming, the Maine Democratic Party must select a replacement at an imminent nominating convention, leaving candidates barely two weeks to build statewide name recognition and fundraising networks.
The field is diverse but unified in casting itself as outsider alternatives to Collins’s nearly three decade tenure. Troy Jackson, a fifth generation logger and former state Senate president, announced his bid within hours of Platner’s withdrawal and has already secured endorsements from 54 state and local officials. Nirav Shah, a lawyer and epidemiologist who lost the June gubernatorial primary, is promising to fight medical debt and make billionaires “pay their fair share.” Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who gained national attention in 2024 for ruling Donald Trump ineligible for the state’s Republican primary ballot, also entered the race after finishing fourth in the gubernatorial contest. Other contenders include Dan Kleban, co owner of Maine Beer Company, Jordan Wood, a 36 year old former congressional staffer, and Paige Loud, a social worker who also lost a House bid. All are positioning themselves against the political establishment in varying ways, with Wood declaring that cynics who say a gay man cannot win are “wrong.”
The collapse of Platner’s campaign has left the party in a precarious position. Platner, a former Marine and oyster farmer who won a record breaking primary victory, had already survived controversies over offensive Reddit posts, a now covered tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and a Wall Street Journal report that his wife said he sent sexually explicit texts to several women early in their marriage. But the rape allegation by former girlfriend Jenny Racicot, who alleged Platner entered her home drunk in 2021 and forced himself on her, proved fatal, causing Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Bernie Sanders, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to withdraw support. Platner’s campaign had $2.2 million on hand as of May, but under FEC rules he can transfer only $2,000 directly to his replacement, leaving the new nominee to build a war chest from scratch in a compressed timeframe.
Republicans are greeting the chaos with confidence. “Susan Collins has defeated every DC anointed candidate Chuck Schumer has sent her way,” said Samantha Cantrell of the Senate Republicans’ campaign arm, “and she’ll defeat whichever loser comes out of this process as well.” The dismissive tone belies the stakes, Democrats need a net gain of four seats to reclaim the Senate majority, and Maine is the only blue leaning state with a Republican incumbent. If the party cannot carry Maine, its path to control becomes virtually impossible, forcing reliance on winning in states Donald Trump carried by double digits. For now, the race remains Collins’s to lose, as six Democrats compete not only against each other but against the clock to mount a credible challenge to one of the Senate’s most entrenched moderates.
