Sarajevo is set to make history as it hosts its first ever official FIBA 3×3 basketball tournament on July 24 and 25, marking the city’s debut on the International Basketball Federation’s global competition calendar. The event represents a major milestone for basketball in Bosnia and Herzegovina, bringing together top teams from the country and abroad while showcasing Sarajevo as a growing destination for international sporting events.
The two day tournament will take place on the plateau opposite Sarajevo City Hall, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The opening day will focus on youth competitions, featuring categories for young players alongside skills challenges, a three point shooting contest, and opportunities for fans to meet members of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national basketball team. The second day will feature the senior tournament, with 18 of the highest ranked teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina, neighboring countries, and across Europe competing for victory.
Organizers say the tournament is about more than just competition. FIBA 3×3 basketball has become one of the fastest growing formats of the sport, officially joining the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. Its fast paced style, shorter matches, and emphasis on individual decision making have made it increasingly popular worldwide, particularly among younger players.
Tournament organizer Eldin Čamdžić emphasized that the format helps athletes develop leadership, confidence, and responsibility by encouraging players to make decisions on the court without direct coaching during games. He believes hosting an official FIBA event will provide valuable experience for local athletes while raising the profile of Bosnian basketball on the international stage.
Beyond the action on the court, visitors can enjoy entertainment, interactive activities, and prize giveaways, including sports merchandise and travel rewards provided by tournament sponsors. Local authorities, including the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo and the Ministry of Culture and Sports, supported the project, recognizing its potential to promote both sport and tourism.
The addition of Sarajevo to the official FIBA 3×3 calendar reflects the continued global expansion of the sport and offers Bosnia and Herzegovina an opportunity to strengthen its presence in international basketball. If successful, the event could pave the way for future FIBA competitions in the country, further establishing Sarajevo as a destination for major sporting events.
