Former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said Serbia should have a stronger place within Europe, expressing support for the country’s ambitions to join the European Union and eventually become part of the Schengen Area.
During his visit to Belgrade, Babiš said Serbia has made progress and deserves greater recognition from European institutions. He called for a faster integration process for Western Balkan countries, arguing that the region has been waiting too long for closer ties with the EU.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić welcomed Babiš’s remarks, saying that support from European partners is important for Serbia’s future. He emphasized the importance of closer economic cooperation, easier movement of people and stronger connections with the European market.
The two leaders also discussed trade and investment between Serbia and the Czech Republic. Babiš highlighted the growing presence of Czech companies in Serbia and said economic cooperation between the two countries continues to develop.
The visit also included meetings with business representatives from both countries, focusing on future investments and economic partnerships.
Serbia has been an EU candidate country since 2012, but its membership process remains linked to ongoing reforms and negotiations with the bloc. The country has also expressed interest in deeper integration with European structures, including greater access to the Schengen zone.
