Former Bosnia and Herzegovina national team player and current president of Borac Banja Luka’s board, Zvjezdan Misimović, has been detained as part of a police operation carried out in Banja Luka and Gradiška.
The investigation, led by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), reportedly focuses on suspicions of abuse of office and money laundering. Misimović was taken to SIPA facilities for questioning as authorities continue gathering information.
According to unofficial reports, the case is connected to a suspected financial irregularity involving a football transfer. Investigators are looking into allegations of financial fraud and possible money laundering involving around 400,000 convertible marks, which is approximately €200,000.
Misimović is one of the most recognizable names in Bosnian football history. During his playing career, the attacking midfielder represented several major European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg, Galatasaray and Dynamo Moscow.
He reached the peak of his club career with Wolfsburg, where he won the German Bundesliga title alongside Bosnian teammate Edin Džeko. Misimović was also a key figure for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, making more than 80 appearances and helping the country qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Known for his creativity, vision and technical ability, Misimović was considered one of the best players of his generation in Bosnia. A famous moment from the 2014 World Cup showed his quality on the international stage, when even Lionel Messi attempted a rare sliding tackle to stop him during their match.
