The historic coastal city of Kotor in Montenegro has officially launched its candidacy to become the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue for 2028, presenting a project designed to strengthen cultural cooperation, preserve heritage, and connect communities across the Mediterranean region. The initiative, called “Kurenat”, brings together local institutions, cultural organizations, and civil society groups with the goal of positioning Kotor as a leading cultural center in Europe.
The project is based on the idea of “kurenat”, a local word referring to sea currents that connect different places and cultures. Organizers say the concept represents the historical role of Kotor as a meeting point of different civilizations, influences, and traditions throughout the centuries. Through this initiative, the city hopes to highlight its UNESCO-protected heritage while creating new opportunities for cultural exchange and international cooperation.
The candidacy includes three main themes: “Anchors,” “Tides,” and “Horizons,” representing Kotor’s past, present, and future. The program focuses on preserving cultural heritage, encouraging artistic collaboration, supporting education and youth programs, and developing creative industries that can continue beyond 2028.
Local officials and cultural representatives believe the initiative could help Kotor address some of the challenges facing the city, including rapid urban development, increasing tourism pressure, and the need for better protection of cultural and historical resources. They emphasize that cooperation between public institutions, artists, and civil organizations is one of the most important parts of the project.
If selected, Kotor would use the title to organize cultural events, international programs, workshops, and discussions focused on Mediterranean identity and dialogue. Organizers say that regardless of the final decision, the partnerships created through the candidacy will continue to support the city’s cultural development and strengthen its role as a bridge between Mediterranean communities.
