The Macedonian Orthodox community in Australia commemorated Ilinden this year with church services and celebrations held across all parish communities of the Australian-Sydney Diocese of the Macedonian Orthodox Church – Ohrid Archbishopric.
Holy Liturgies were celebrated in every church, during which the Ilinden message of His Beatitude Archbishop Stefan of Ohrid and Macedonia was read to the faithful. In his message, Archbishop Stefan emphasized that the three Ilindens—1903, 1944, and 1991—represent the historical continuity of Macedonia and the Macedonian people’s centuries-long aspiration for freedom and statehood.
The Archbishop stressed that freedom is not a permanent achievement but a value that must continually be protected and defended, calling on believers to remain faithful to their faith, justice, honor, and dignity.
Following the liturgies, Macedonian Orthodox parishes throughout Australia organized spiritual, cultural, and community programs. Large numbers of worshippers, families, and children took part in cultural performances, traditional celebrations, and communal gatherings to mark the occasion.
The Australian-Sydney Diocese highlighted that Macedonian Orthodox churches in the diaspora continue to serve as important centers for preserving the Orthodox faith, the Macedonian language, culture, and national identity. The Diocese also described Ilinden as a symbol that unites Macedonians regardless of where they live.
