One of Croatia’s most beautiful protected landscapes will become a unique running course this September, when RangerRUN 2026 returns to Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. The sixth edition of the event will take place on September 12 in Krapje, bringing together runners, families and nature lovers. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the area while taking part in an outdoor sporting event. The combination of running, wildlife and traditional landscapes makes RangerRUN very different from a typical road race. The routes pass through the authentic Posavina landscape and near the Krapje Đol ornithological reserve. Participants will also run alongside the Sava River, traditional wooden houses and open pastures. The landscape is home to native Croatian breeds, including Posavina horses and Slavonian Syrmian Podolian cattle. These surroundings are an important part of the event and allow participants to experience the natural and cultural heritage of the region while running.
The combination of sport and nature is at the heart of RangerRUN 2026. Organizers use the event to promote outdoor recreation while raising awareness about biodiversity and environmental protection. The event also highlights the cultural heritage of Lonjsko Polje and its traditional communities. Its slogan, “Wake up the ranger in you!”, reflects the idea of encouraging visitors to become more connected with nature. The program includes routes designed for different ages and fitness levels. Participants can choose between several running distances, including 6.4 kilometer and 9.4 kilometer courses. There is also a short 50 meter children’s race and a special KID’S route for children up to five years old. This makes the event accessible not only to experienced runners but also to families and recreational participants.
For visitors, the event offers a chance to experience Lonjsko Polje from a different perspective. Rather than simply walking through the nature park, participants will move through landscapes shaped by the Sava River, wetlands, forests and traditional architecture. Wildlife and open pastures add another dimension to the experience. The result is an event that combines physical activity with an opportunity to discover one of Croatia’s most distinctive natural areas. Lonjsko Polje is particularly important because it is one of Europe’s largest preserved floodplain areas. Its wetlands provide important habitats for numerous bird species and other wildlife. Traditional villages, wooden houses and agricultural landscapes also contribute to the area’s unique identity. The protected landscape therefore provides a natural setting that makes RangerRUN more than simply another running event.
The event is also designed to be welcoming to people who are not competitive runners. Families, recreational athletes and visitors who simply want to spend a day outdoors can all take part. This makes RangerRUN 2026 as much a nature experience as a sporting event. For many participants, the surrounding landscape may be just as important as their final running time. Registration is already open, with the deadline listed as August 31. RangerRUN 2026 will take place on September 12 in Krapje, giving visitors another reason to plan an early autumn trip to this part of Croatia. For anyone looking for an alternative to the country’s busy coastal destinations, the event offers a combination of protected nature, traditional villages, wildlife and outdoor activity in one memorable weekend.
