Macedonia’s largest ever delegation at the Mediterranean Games has arrived in Taranto, Italy, with a young and ambitious group of athletes determined to make their mark on the international stage. The 20th edition of the competition has also attracted major attention from Macedonian sports fans, with digital creator and YouTuber Stefan Lazarov bringing behind the scenes coverage from Italy in cooperation with the Macedonian Olympic Committee. His presence is helping introduce a new generation of athletes to a wider audience while highlighting the dedication and excitement surrounding the Macedonian team. The delegation includes 90 athletes competing in 19 sports, with around 70 percent between 18 and 20 years old.
For many of the athletes, Taranto represents much more than another international competition. The Mediterranean Games provide valuable experience and an opportunity to prepare for future Olympic challenges. The delegation also includes professional support staff, including mental coach and sports psychologist Sofija Georgievska, who has emphasized the importance of mental preparation and maintaining focus under pressure. Several athletes have already attracted attention because of their ambitions and personal stories.
Eighteen year old handball player Leona Milenkovska has the honor of carrying the Macedonian flag and leading the women’s national team, working under the guidance of legendary handball figure Indira Kastratović. Other young competitors are also arriving with major ambitions. In boxing, Alen Rustemovski is targeting a gold medal, while footballer Andrej Stojanovski is preparing for a difficult group against Tunisia, Turkey and Morocco. Macedonia is also making history in badminton, with Ivan Peovski representing the country in the event for the first time. Among the athletes expected to attract particular attention are taekwondo star Dejan Georgievski and swimmer Nikola Gjuretanovikj, who recently broke a long standing national record.
The Macedonian team is hoping to build on the country’s previous achievements at the Mediterranean Games and produce one of its strongest performances yet. Beyond the results, however, Taranto is giving a new generation of athletes the chance to gain experience, confidence and international recognition. With young competitors carrying the hopes of their country and a growing digital presence bringing their stories closer to fans, the Games could mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Macedonian sport.
