Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić says relations between Serbia and the United States are entering a new period, describing the planned strategic dialogue between Belgrade and Washington as a potential turning point. Speaking in Belgrade on August 27, Vučić thanked the United States for a $5.1 million donation supporting the destruction of leftover weapons and unexploded ordnance and said Serbia and the U.S. should focus on building a different relationship for the future. He acknowledged that the countries have gone through difficult periods, particularly around the events of 1999 and 2008, but argued that both sides now have an opportunity to develop closer cooperation.
The strategic dialogue is expected to provide a new framework for discussions between Serbia and the United States on a range of political, economic and security issues. Vučić said the process is creating greater respect and understanding between the two sides and giving both countries an opportunity to listen to each other’s positions. The U.S. State Department has also described the strategic dialogue as reflecting a new era in bilateral relations and a commitment to deepening the partnership between Washington and Belgrade.
The relationship also has an important economic dimension, particularly because Serbia is trying to resolve the future of its energy company NIS. Vučić said he is now optimistic that the issue could potentially be resolved in September, while acknowledging the importance of cooperation with the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control and the American side. A solution to the NIS situation would be particularly significant for Serbia because of the company’s importance to the country’s energy sector and the wider implications of the sanctions and ownership dispute.
For Belgrade, the emerging relationship with Washington could therefore become an important part of its foreign policy and economic strategy. Vučić said Serbia cannot change the past but can influence its future, presenting the strategic dialogue as an opportunity to move beyond difficult periods and focus on practical cooperation. If the dialogue develops as expected, it could lead to closer coordination in areas including security, energy, investment and regional issues. For Serbia, the coming months could show whether the announced “new era” becomes a lasting shift in relations with the United States or remains mainly a political signal.
