Trump Becomes the First Living President Featured on a U.S. Dollar Coin

Donald Trump has become the first living U.S. president to appear on a circulating American coin, after the U.S. Mint released a new $1 coin featuring his portrait. The unusual issue was launched on September 2 as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. Trump’s portrait appears on the front of the coin alongside the words “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the dates “1776~2026.” The reverse features the Presidential Seal, with an eagle, the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the number 250 commemorating the nation’s semiquincentennial. The U.S. Mint says the coin is legal tender and will be released into circulation, while also being offered to collectors in rolls and bags.

The decision has attracted particular attention because American law has traditionally prevented living people from being depicted on U.S. currency. Federal rules state that portraits on American currency are generally reserved for deceased individuals. However, the Trump administration is relying on legislation passed in 2020 that authorized the Treasury to create special $1 coins celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. The legislation allows designs associated with the semiquincentennial, while restrictions apply to portraits on the reverse side. Because Trump’s image is placed on the front of the coin, the administration argues that the design falls within the legal framework established for the anniversary issue. The result is a highly unusual piece of American currency that breaks with a tradition that has lasted for generations. Although the coins have a golden appearance, they are not actually made of gold. The U.S. Mint says they are composed primarily of copper, with zinc, manganese and nickel, giving them their distinctive golden color. The Mint began selling rolls containing 25 coins for $61 and bags containing 100 coins for $154.50.

A limited number of coins struck on July 4 also carry a special “July 4th” mark and were randomly distributed among the rolls and bags. The coin was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna, using an official White House photograph as inspiration. The Mint describes the issue as part of a broader redesign of American circulating coins for the country’s 250th anniversary. The release has already generated political and public debate, with supporters viewing the coin as a historic anniversary item and critics questioning the decision to place a sitting president’s image on American money. The timing also makes the issue especially notable because Trump is serving his second presidential term and is therefore still a living president. Regardless of the political reaction, the new dollar represents an unusual moment in American numismatic history. The U.S. Mint has confirmed that the Trump $1 coin is intended to circulate during 2026, meaning Americans could potentially encounter the unusual design in everyday transactions as the country celebrates 250 years since the Declaration of Independence.
