President Donald Trump announced Friday that he was banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, effective immediately, accusing the three news organizations of repeatedly publishing what he called “fake news.”
Trump also indicated that additional media outlets could face similar restrictions, later naming The New York Times and The Washington Post when asked which organizations might be next.
The precise scope and implementation of the ban remained unclear on Friday. Reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were still present at the White House later that day. The White House subsequently indicated that the outlets would be barred from the White House grounds beginning Saturday.
Trump accused the three outlets of “reporting FAKE NEWS” in a social media post, arguing that media organizations “shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES” when covering the president, his administration, or the United States.
Trump also warned that “Other Fake News Media Outlets” could follow, signaling that the restrictions could potentially extend beyond CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
CNN said it would defend its constitutional right to cover the White House, while Politico said it would defend its rights under the First Amendment.
Both outlets characterized the White House’s action as a challenge to their ability to independently report on the administration.
The precise scope of the proposed ban remains unclear. Trump has not specified whether the restrictions would apply to individual White House events, reporters’ press credentials, access to the White House grounds, or broader participation in White House press facilities and the presidential press pool.
