The Netherlands strongly supports Montenegro’s EU membership ambitions, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten told Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović during a meeting in New York.
The two leaders discussed the closing of negotiating chapters and the procedure through which the Netherlands approves Montenegro’s next steps toward membership in the European Union.
Dutch Approval Process May Take Longer
Jetten explained that the Dutch parliament plays an important role at every stage of the accession process.
As a result, obtaining the Netherlands’ approval can take longer than it does in some other EU member states.
Milatović said the meeting confirmed that there is no uncertainty regarding Dutch political support for Montenegro’s EU membership.
He emphasized that Montenegro must continue fulfilling its obligations and maintain the pace of closing negotiating chapters.
Milatović Meets European Leaders in New York
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, where Milatović also spoke with several European leaders.
His meetings included talks with representatives from the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Ireland, Spain, Romania, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia, Cyprus and Germany.
Milatović also met European Council President António Costa, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The discussions focused on Montenegro’s EU membership path, relations with key partners and issues affecting the country’s international position and development.
