The Balkans are attracting growing interest from North American travelers, with destinations across the region offering alternatives to Europe’s traditional tourist hotspots.

In a travel feature published by Forbes, journalist Emese Maczko highlights seven autumn experiences, from hiking in Bosnia and Herzegovina to preparing traditional ajvar in Macedonia.

According to travel company Explore Worldwide, bookings from North America have increased by 39% for Croatia and 32% for Albania compared with the previous year.

The company also reported a 138% increase in searches for some of its trips to Macedonia.

Seven Balkan Experiences Recommended by Travel Experts

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Travelers can explore Sutjeska National Park, hike near Mount Maglić and visit traditional mountain villages such as Umoljani. The region offers dramatic landscapes and opportunities to experience rural life.

Croatia: Istria becomes a destination for truffle hunting and cycling during autumn. The forests surrounding Motovun and Buzet are particularly popular for white truffles, with October considered a peak period.

Montenegro: Biogradska Gora National Park offers kayaking on Biogradsko Lake, surrounded by forests displaying autumn colors. Lake Skadar is another destination for birdwatching during seasonal migration.

Macedonia: Forbes highlights traditional ajvar preparation as an authentic autumn experience. Visitors can learn how roasted red peppers become one of the region’s best-known specialties. Outdoor attractions include Matka Canyon, Mavrovo National Park and Lake Prespa.

Bulgaria: Lake Atanasovsko, near Burgas, attracts flamingos and other migratory birds. The wetlands lie along the Via Pontica migration route, making autumn an important season for birdwatching.

Albania: Butrint Lagoon offers visitors an opportunity to discover local mussel farming traditions. Southern Albania also combines coastal experiences with outdoor adventures and regional cuisine.

Serbia: Autumn is traditionally associated with rakija production, particularly plum brandy known as šljivovica. Visitors can explore rural communities and learn about the preparation of this traditional drink.

Why North American Travelers Are Looking Toward the Balkans

Travel experts interviewed by Forbes point to the region’s combination of natural beauty, historical towns, local cuisine and cultural traditions.

Autumn also offers cooler temperatures and opportunities to explore destinations beyond the busy summer season.

For travelers from the United States and Canada, the Balkans provide experiences ranging from outdoor adventures to traditional food preparation and rural tourism.

The Forbes feature highlights a growing interest in discovering lesser-known European destinations through local experiences rather than conventional sightseeing.
