A concert titled “Toše Forever – Music That Lives On” will be held in Split, Croatia, on October 16, honoring the memory of Macedonian pop icon Toše Proeski, 19 years after his tragic death.
The event will bring together Macedonian and Croatian performers, musicians from across the region, and devoted fans to celebrate the life, music, and legacy of one of the Balkans’ most beloved singers.
Interest in the concert has reportedly been strong, with fans traveling toward Split by bus to attend the tribute.
Macedonian and Regional Artists Unite on Stage
A Macedonian symphony orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Dimovski, will perform orchestral arrangements of some of Proeski’s best-known songs.
The announced Macedonian performers include Dimitar Andonovski, Stojne Nikolova, Bojana Skenderovski, Ognen Zdravkovski, Aleksandar Tasevski, and Seid Aliovski.
Several artists from Croatia who shared a musical connection with Proeski will also take the stage. They include Antonia Šola, Ivana Kovač, daughter of legendary Croatian singer Mišo Kovač, and Petar Dragojević, nephew of celebrated singer Oliver Dragojević.
Montenegrin singer Bojan Marović, a close friend of Proeski, and young Bosnian and Herzegovinian singer Ilma Karahmet are also scheduled to perform.
In addition to orchestral versions of Proeski’s greatest hits, the program will include a segment dedicated to traditional Macedonian music, celebrating the cultural heritage that remained an important part of the singer’s identity.
Questions Surround the Concert’s Organization
The concert is organized by Aleksandar Ivanovski, a Macedonian living in Croatia. According to Ivanovski, he initially received approval from Proeski’s family to organize the tribute and said that copyright arrangements had been handled through Croatia’s ZAMP music rights organization.
However, the family later reportedly communicated that it disagreed with the date selected for the event.
Members of the Proeski family have stated that they are not involved in organizing the Split concert and are preparing a separate commemorative event in North Macedonia next year.
That event is expected to mark the 20th anniversary of Toše Proeski’s death, offering another opportunity for fans to remember the singer whose music continues to connect audiences across the Balkans.
A Legacy That Transcends Borders
Toše Proeski died on October 16, 2007, in a tragic car accident in Croatia at the age of 26. Despite his short life, he left behind a remarkable musical legacy, with songs in Macedonian and other regional languages earning him admirers throughout Southeast Europe.
His powerful voice, emotional performances, humanitarian work, and close relationship with his fans made him much more than a pop star.
The tribute in Split reflects the enduring connection between Proeski and audiences across the region. Nineteen years after his death, his music continues to bring people together in remembrance of an artist whose influence extends far beyond his home country.
