When discussing professional development for young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, opportunities abroad often come to mind first. The BHAAAS Internship Program for biology students highlights the valuable training opportunities already available within the country, connecting students with experienced mentors, modern laboratory techniques, and real-world professional experience.
As part of the program, four biology students completed four-week internships at partner institutions in Tuzla and Sarajevo. At the University Clinical Center Tuzla’s Department of Pathology, Ivana Iliktarević from the University of Banja Luka and Neira Prcić from the International University of Sarajevo trained under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Ermina Iljazović.

At Farmavita BiH’s Quality Control Laboratory in Sarajevo, Milica Čemerdžić and Enisa Šutković, students at the University of Sarajevo, gained practical experience under the guidance of Naida Spahović.
The internships introduced students to laboratory disciplines and techniques, including pathology, cytology, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, microbiological testing, and pharmaceutical quality control. They also provided insight into production processes and the standards required to ensure the safety and quality of pharmaceutical products.

Mentors emphasized that practical training helps students connect academic knowledge with professional responsibilities, develop critical thinking, and identify potential career paths. The participating students likewise highlighted the value of hands-on experience, supportive mentors, and the opportunity to explore areas of biology they had previously encountered mainly in textbooks.

Strengthening Local Expertise Through Collaboration
The BHAAAS Internship Program demonstrates how international cooperation can strengthen domestic expertise by connecting students with the knowledge, facilities, and professionals already present in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The next call for applications is expected in spring 2027. BHAAAS invites laboratories, healthcare institutions, companies, universities, research centers, and other organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the program and help prepare the next generation of biology professionals.
