From the son of hardworking Polish immigrants to a Vice President and Relationship Manager at PNC Bank, Tom Gorka’s journey is a story of persistence, humility, and the values that shaped him on both sides of the Atlantic. His success did not happen overnight. It was built through years of dedication, a commitment to treating people with respect, and lessons learned from the family that gave him his foundation.
In an interview with First Balkan Media, Tom Gorka shared his personal journey.
Success stories often begin long before a professional title appears on a business card. For Tom Gorka, Vice President and Relationship Manager in Commercial & Institutional Banking at PNC Bank, the foundation was laid at home, through the example of his parents, the traditions of his Polish heritage, and the importance of hard work.
Born in Chicago, Gorka grew up in a family whose roots are firmly planted in Krakow, Poland. Although he was born in the United States, he spent approximately six years living in Poland. His brothers and sisters were all born there, and with a large extended family still in his homeland, his connection to Poland has remained an important part of his life.
His journey offers a perspective familiar to many children of immigrant families: learning to navigate two cultures while building a future in America without losing touch with the traditions and values of the country their family calls home.
“My journey began with the values I learned early in life: work hard, stay humble, treat people well, and keep moving forward even when the path is not easy,” Gorka says.
Those principles have accompanied him throughout his career and continue to guide the way he approaches business and relationships.

A Father’s Example That Shaped His Future
Among the most influential people in Gorka’s life was his father, a machinist who worked long hours and remained with the same company for more than 35 years.
His father worked alongside people from Eastern Europe and many other backgrounds. What impressed Gorka most was the way his father built relationships with everyone around him, regardless of their background.
“He taught me a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my life: if you want to be treated fairly and with respect, you have to show that same fairness and respect to everyone,” Gorka recalls.
His father became his first mentor, demonstrating that success is not measured only by professional accomplishments, but also by reliability, loyalty, and the way a person treats others.
Watching his father dedicate decades to his work taught Gorka the value of consistency and the importance of earning people’s trust over time.
Those lessons would later become central to his own career in banking, an industry in which lasting relationships and a reputation for integrity can be just as important as financial expertise.
Growing Up Between Chicago and Krakow
For Gorka, Polish heritage is not simply a story passed down through generations. Having lived in Poland for around six years, he experienced its culture, traditions, and everyday family life firsthand.
His childhood included holidays, name days, and gatherings around the dinner table—moments that reinforced the importance of staying connected.
“Those gatherings were about more than celebrating an occasion; they reinforced the importance of family, tradition, and staying connected,” he says.
His family’s connection to Krakow remains strong, and he tries to visit Poland every year. These visits are an opportunity to spend time with relatives, share meals, reconnect with familiar traditions, and maintain the relationships that have shaped his identity.
Living in both countries has given him a perspective that he considers a gift. Rather than feeling that he must choose between his American and Polish identities, he sees the two as complementary parts of who he is.
“I do not have to choose between two identities; both have helped shape who I am,” he explains.
He appreciates America’s culture of opportunity, where people can build careers, establish businesses, meet people from different backgrounds, and pursue new directions. Poland, meanwhile, remains close to his heart for its history, cultural identity, traditions, and emphasis on family and community.
For Gorka, the experience of living between two countries has strengthened his adaptability, gratitude, and appreciation for the opportunities his family worked hard to create.

Discovering a Career in Banking
Gorka began his banking career immediately after high school. He quickly discovered that the profession offered something beyond numbers, transactions, and financial products: the opportunity to help people achieve important goals.
He remembers the satisfaction of helping customers reach milestones such as purchasing their first car or buying their first home.
“Those experiences showed me that banking is about much more than financial products—it is about helping people move forward in their lives,” he says.
That motivation has remained a constant throughout his professional journey.
Today, as a Vice President and Relationship Manager at PNC Bank, Gorka works in Commercial & Institutional Banking, where the focus extends to the needs and ambitions of businesses and institutions.
His role involves understanding clients’ goals, helping them navigate financial decisions, and connecting them with the right expertise to support their growth.
Commercial banking, he explains, is a team effort. A client’s needs may involve lending, treasury management, equipment financing, foreign exchange, or other specialized services. His responsibility is to understand the broader picture, listen carefully, and bring together colleagues who can provide appropriate solutions.
“One of the biggest lessons in building my career was realizing that success in banking is not simply about understanding financial products. It is about earning trust, communicating clearly, following through, and surrounding yourself with people who bring different expertise,” Gorka says.
The approach reflects the values he learned from his father: build genuine relationships, treat people fairly, and become someone others can depend on.
Success Takes Time—and the Right Relationships
Gorka does not describe success as a single breakthrough or a moment when everything suddenly falls into place.
Instead, he sees it as the result of accumulated effort, experience, and relationships.
“I never viewed success as something that happens overnight,” he says. “For me, it has been built one relationship, one challenge, and one opportunity at a time.”
His career has taught him that professional growth requires more than technical knowledge. It also demands patience, communication, teamwork, and the willingness to keep learning.
Listening before offering solutions has become an important part of how he works with clients. By understanding their priorities and coordinating the right resources, he aims to build relationships that extend beyond an individual transaction.
For young professionals entering banking or any other competitive field, his experience offers a reminder that reputation is built over time. Trust comes from showing up, following through on commitments, and treating every relationship with respect.
Advice for Immigrants Building a Future in America
Gorka believes that people who come to America—or grow up in immigrant families—should recognize the value of their backgrounds rather than feel pressure to leave them behind.
“Never be embarrassed by where you came from. Your language, culture, background, and family story can be strengths,” he advises.
Having been born in Chicago, lived in Poland, and maintained close ties to his family’s roots in Krakow, he understands how heritage can shape a person’s perspective while leaving room for new opportunities.
His advice is to work hard, remain patient, seek mentors, ask questions, and build genuine relationships. Understanding the environment around you is important, but so is becoming the kind of person others know they can rely on.
He also warns against comparing personal progress with someone else’s timeline.
“Most importantly, do not measure your progress against someone else’s timeline. Building a life and a career takes time.”
It is a message grounded in his own experience and in the example his parents set: success comes from perseverance, character, and the willingness to keep moving forward.

A Broader Definition of Success
Over the years, Gorka’s understanding of success has expanded beyond professional recognition and financial stability.
Career achievement matters, but it is only one part of a fulfilling life. He also values strong relationships, continued personal growth, being dependable, and helping others create opportunities.
Professionally, he finds meaning in building lasting relationships with clients and helping businesses work through important decisions. Personally, staying connected to his family in Poland and preserving traditions across generations remind him of the values that keep him grounded.
“I want to be proud not only of what I accomplished, but also of how I treated people along the way and the example I leave for others,” he says.
That perspective brings his story back to where it began: the hardworking parents who gave him his foundation, the father whose example taught him fairness and respect, and the Polish traditions that continue to connect him to his family’s roots.
Tom Gorka’s journey is a reminder that success is rarely an overnight achievement. It is built through everyday choices, steady effort, meaningful relationships, and values that remain constant even as opportunities grow.
For the children of immigrant families building their own futures in America, his story carries a simple message: you can pursue success in your adopted homeland without leaving your heritage behind. In fact, the values you bring with you may become some of your greatest strengths.
