President Donald Trump has claimed that Russia could have captured Kyiv within four hours in February 2022. However, he argued that one Russian general made a disastrous decision that prevented a quick victory.
Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump described the opening days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to Trump, approximately 1,000 Russian tanks were advancing along a concrete highway toward the Ukrainian capital.
He claimed the vehicles could have reached Kyiv in just a few hours. Instead, an unidentified general allegedly ordered them off the road and into muddy farmland.
Trump called the commander a “very stupid general” and questioned whether he was still alive.
Trump Blames Russian General for Failed Kyiv Offensive
Trump said the Russian military had an opportunity to end the war on its first day.
According to his account, the tanks were traveling along a highway without major obstacles.
However, he claimed a commander unexpectedly ordered the vehicles to change direction.
The Russian tanks then entered farmland, where heavy rainfall had turned the ground into deep mud.
Trump compared the conditions to quicksand. He said the vehicles became trapped and could not move forward or backward.
The president also claimed that Ukrainian forces subsequently used American-made Javelin anti-tank weapons to destroy Russian vehicles.
He emphasized that his administration had supplied Ukraine with Javelin missiles during his first term.
However, Trump provided no evidence identifying the Russian general. His claim that a single decision prevented Russia from capturing Kyiv remains unverified.
What Really Happened During Russia’s Advance on Kyiv?
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
During the first days, a massive Russian military convoy advanced toward Kyiv from Belarus.
Satellite images showed military vehicles stretching for dozens of miles along roads north of the Ukrainian capital.
However, the advance soon stalled.
Military analysts identified several reasons for Russia’s difficulties. These included fuel shortages, mechanical failures and serious logistical problems.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces attacked Russian vehicles and supply lines.
Poor military coordination also contributed to the failed offensive. In addition, muddy terrain made movement difficult for armored vehicles operating away from paved roads.
The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has examined Russia’s planning failures and Ukraine’s effective resistance during the invasion’s opening phase.
There is no reliable evidence that one general’s decision determined the outcome of the entire operation.
Similarly, Trump’s suggestion that Russia could have captured Kyiv within four hours is not supported by established military assessments.
Russian troops eventually withdrew from the Kyiv region in early April 2022.
Trump’s latest comments came amid renewed calls for Ukraine to negotiate an end to the war.
The president argued that the conflict must end and warned about continued casualties.
He also repeated his claim that his administration had provided important military assistance to Ukraine.
Nevertheless, Russia’s failed advance on Kyiv demonstrated that its initial expectations of a rapid victory did not match the reality of Ukrainian resistance.
