Vangelis Liolios, president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, has been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged match-fixing and bribery in Greek basketball. Four referees have also reportedly been arrested, while a sixth suspect remains wanted. Panathinaikos has responded by announcing plans to pursue legal action over what it describes as years of unfair treatment.

Greek basketball has been rocked by a major investigation after federation president Vangelis Liolios and four referees were arrested on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, according to Greek media reports.

Authorities issued six arrest warrants following a three-month investigation led by Athens sports prosecutor Apostolos Grammenos into alleged bribery, corruption and the manipulation of basketball games.

The investigation reportedly concerns matches played in Greece’s top basketball division and other competitions over at least the past five years.

The six suspects named in the warrants reportedly include Liolios, four basketball officials or referees, and businessman and former basketball player Giorgos Mavraganis, a close associate of the federation president. Mavraganis had not been arrested at the time of the latest reports.

€820,000 in Cash Reportedly Found During Search

One of the most significant developments in the investigation was the reported discovery of €820,000 in cash at the home of a referee in Katerini, northern Greece.

Greek media reported that investigators considered the amount inconsistent with the individual’s declared financial circumstances.

According to reports, the case file includes allegations and complaints submitted by basketball officials, along with messages examined during the investigation.

The six individuals had reportedly been summoned to provide explanations to the prosecutor but failed to respond, after which arrest warrants were issued.

The allegations have not been established in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Panathinaikos Issues Strong Statement

Following the arrests, Greek basketball club Panathinaikos released a strongly worded statement accusing individuals within the sport’s officiating system of repeatedly treating the club unfairly.

The club said it intends to pursue legal action to seek redress for what it considers past injustices involving refereeing decisions, penalties and lost titles.

Panathinaikos also referred to its owner, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, who has repeatedly criticized Greek basketball officiating.

The club’s statement reads in full:

“For years, Panathinaikos has been subjected to appalling officiating by certain individuals who, time and again, have allegedly been appointed unlawfully. The club has lost titles, played behind closed doors in an arena financed with its own money, and paid hundreds of thousands of euros in fines simply because its owner, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, publicly condemns the injustice and speaks openly about what others see but remain silent about.

As a result, he has been targeted and defamed, banned from watching his own team, and even prevented from attending the memorial service for his father.

“Panathinaikos continues to play in competitions officiated by referees who have faced criminal proceedings, referees in whose homes hundreds of thousands of euros in cash have reportedly been found. We continue to compete with officials who, in our view, do not respect the sport. We continue to play within a rotten system that is destroying what we love most—basketball.

“You tried to exhaust us. You tried to undermine every ideal, every principle of logic and even reality itself. You believed you were succeeding. But you forgot something very important: Panathinaikos is not trophies, titles, jerseys or individuals. Panathinaikos is dignity. And those of us who serve this club know that by defending it, we are defending its history, its symbol—the clover—its principles of justice and its values.

“Panathinaikos will pursue legal action to reclaim what it believes was taken from it by a corrupt system. We owe this to our supporters, who endured this ordeal while watching it unfold live on television. We also owe it to our players and coaches, who were denied what they deserved.

“And we will do it. This will be our next victory against this system.”

The statement reflects the club’s position and its allegations about past officiating. Those claims are separate from the criminal investigation and have not been independently established by the arrests.

What Happens Next?

The investigation is expected to move into the next stage of judicial proceedings, with the arrested individuals due to appear before the relevant authorities to provide explanations.

The outcome could have significant implications for the Greek Basketball Federation, the officiating system and the wider domestic basketball community.

For now, the central issues remain the allegations of bribery and match manipulation, the origin of the cash reportedly discovered during searches, and the legal consequences that may follow.

The case has also reignited longstanding tensions between Panathinaikos and Greek basketball authorities. Whether the investigation will lead to disciplinary changes, further prosecutions or legal action by the club remains to be seen.
