Hollywood star Tom Cruise will receive the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award at a ceremony in April 2027. The honor recognizes his decades-long career as an actor and producer, as well as his contributions to the film industry.
The American Film Institute (AFI) announced the decision on Wednesday, October 21, according to Reuters.
Cruise, known for films such as Top Gun, Jerry Maguire and the Mission: Impossible series, has spent more than four decades in Hollywood.
The award will recognize his work both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
Tom Cruise Joins Hollywood’s Most Celebrated Names
The American Film Institute has presented its Life Achievement Award annually since 1973.
Previous recipients include Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Tom Hanks and Gene Kelly.
The organization honors artists whose work has made a lasting contribution to American cinema.
Kathleen Kennedy, chair of AFI’s board of trustees, praised Cruise’s dedication to filmmaking.
“As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does,” Kennedy said.
She also highlighted his belief in the power of cinema.
“What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together,” she added.
Cruise has long advocated for the theatrical moviegoing experience. He has repeatedly supported major film releases in cinemas rather than relying exclusively on streaming platforms.
Throughout his career, the actor has received three Academy Award nominations for acting.
In 2025, he also received an honorary Oscar recognizing his lifetime contributions to filmmaking.
A Career Spanning More Than Four Decades
Cruise became a major Hollywood star following his breakthrough performance in the 1983 film Risky Business.
His career continued with successful productions including Rain Man, A Few Good Men and Minority Report.
The Mission: Impossible franchise further established his reputation as an action star.
Cruise became especially known for performing demanding stunts and maintaining a strong commitment to large-scale theatrical productions.
His latest film, Digger, a big-budget dark comedy, recently opened in theaters.
However, the movie struggled during its opening weekend in October. It finished fifth at the U.S. and Canadian box office.
Despite the film’s disappointing debut, Cruise remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors.
The upcoming AFI ceremony will celebrate his influence on American filmmaking and his continued commitment to the cinema experience.
