Dijana Hrka, the mother of Stefan Hrka, who died in the collapse of the railway station canopy in Novi Sad, Serbia, has delivered an emotional statement following the election victory. She described the result as a victory for families seeking justice and called for everyone responsible for the tragedy to be held accountable.
Speaking to Serbian television network N1, Hrka said she had waited two years for this moment and would not abandon her fight for justice.
“This is a victory for all of us, a victory for our children. This is only the beginning of what we need to do. I waited two years. I’m shaking like a leaf, I can barely speak,” she said.
“I waited two years for this moment, for them to fall. And now I expect everyone to be held accountable, including Aleksandar Vučić, Zorana Mihajlović and Milorad Dodik. Those are the three main people responsible,” Hrka added.
Her accusations reflect her personal position and have not been established as legal findings.
“The Evil Is Gone”
Hrka expressed relief following the political developments in Serbia.
“I don’t know what to say, but in a way, I’m happy. The evil is gone. Something worse cannot come back,” she said.
She also addressed pardons previously granted by former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, insisting that she would continue demanding accountability.
“He can pardon them, but I won’t. I will not allow that. I will not allow anyone to be pardoned,” Hrka said.
She expressed hope that the pardons could be overturned and that those responsible could face punishment.
“I know what I will do, but I hope all of this can be reversed and that we can punish everyone. If the law doesn’t do it, I will. Whatever happens to me, happens. I have nothing left to lose,” she said.
Two Years of Demanding Justice
Hrka recalled her hunger strike a year earlier, when she believed that elections would not be necessary to bring about change.
Her son Stefan was among those killed when the concrete canopy at Novi Sad railway station collapsed.
The tragedy sparked widespread public anger and demands for accountability in Serbia.
Hrka has become one of the prominent voices calling for justice for the victims and their families.
Her latest statement reflects both the personal grief of losing her son and her determination to continue seeking accountability.
