European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos congratulated Serbia’s Student List on its parliamentary election victory, saying Serbian citizens had made their voices heard after nearly two years of protests. She described the result as an opportunity for a new chapter in Serbia’s relationship with the European Union.
In a statement posted on X on October 25, Kos highlighted the large voter turnout and the demands for democracy, the rule of law and accountability that have shaped Serbia’s protest movement.
“Dear Serbia, you have made your voice heard!” she wrote.
“After nearly two years of protests for democracy, the rule of law and the fight against corruption, Serbians turned out in historic numbers.”
Kos Welcomes Student List Victory
The EU enlargement commissioner congratulated the student-backed political movement, linking its campaign to principles promoted by the European Union.
“Congratulations to the Student List on your victory!” Kos wrote.
“These are the very values at the heart of our European Union.”
Her remarks followed Serbia’s parliamentary elections, in which the Student List defeated the coalition associated with Aleksandar Vučić, according to the reported results.
The student-led movement emerged from a prolonged period of public demonstrations demanding institutional accountability and action against corruption.
“The Door to the EU Is Open”
Kos also suggested that the election result could create an opportunity to strengthen relations between Serbia and the European Union.
“A new chapter can begin for Serbia. The door to the EU is open, and we are ready to move forward together,” she wrote.
The message signals the European Commissioner’s willingness to work with Serbia following the political changes.
Serbia has been an EU candidate country since 2012, with accession negotiations formally beginning in 2014.
Kos’s statement places democracy, the rule of law and anti-corruption efforts at the heart of the country’s potential next phase of European integration.
